Every student deserves a safe, modern classroom - no matter where they live.
However, school infrastructure gaps worsen in low-SES, regional, remote, Aboriginal communities and Torres Strait Islander communities.
These gaps were very evident during our visits to remote schools in northern Western Australia.
Despite public schools educating 80% of students from remote areas, funding for building and facilities has not kept pace with demand.
Completion rates in remote areas are significantly lower than in cities. To lift completion rates, children in remote public schools require access to a wider range of senior secondary academic subjects and vocational programs.
However, in the 2025 State of Our Schools survey only 26% of principals at remote public schools said they could offer the full curriculum to their students. This dropped to a staggering just 8% for very remote public schools.
The Schools For Our Future inquiry will make recommendations about what is needed for the future to help governments make long-term, strategic decisions.
Whether you are from a remote, rural, regional or metro area - we want to hear from you.
